Rush for Eid train tickets: 33 lakh online attempts in 15 minutes

Bangladesh Railway (BR) today began selling advance online tickets for intercity trains ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

Ticket sales for the Eastern Zone — covering Dhaka, Chattogram, Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions — began at 2:15pm, according to Railway officials.Around 12,500 of the 15,266 available seats on Eastern Zone trains for May 23 were sold within 15 minutes of tickets going on sale.

Within the first 15 minutes, users made around 33 lakh online attempts to purchase tickets, officials said.

Meanwhile, ticket sales for the Western Zone — covering Rajshahi, Rangpur and Khulna divisions — began at 8:15am today for May 23 journeys. Around 14,000 of the 15,974 available seats were sold within 30 minutes.

Shondip Debnath, chief executive officer of Shohoz, Bangladesh Railway’s online ticketing platform, confirmed the figures to The Daily Star.

He said ticket sales for the Western Zone were almost complete by 2:00pm, while sales for the Eastern Zone were still ongoing.

According to him, users made around two lakh attempts per minute to buy tickets for the Western Zone.

Bangladesh Railway is selling all advance Eid tickets online.

On May 23, a total of 43 intercity trains are scheduled to depart from Dhaka. Of them, 20 will operate on Western Zone routes.
